________ CARDINAL MINT
Laura Porter & Valentin Lewandowski’s residency and exhibition
When a resident of the town of Eeklo (Flanders) is not satisfied with his head, he has the possibility to have it replaced by a baker.
The procedure is as follows:
A beheading is carried out by the craftsman in order to separate the head from the body.
In order to steem the bleeding, a cabbage is then placed on the neck of the temporarily headless inhabitant.
A new face is kneaded and rolled, rubbed with a new finish and baked in the oven. The operation is difficult, as the prosthesis may deform during firing.
The substitution head is finally placed on the individual.
The result is not always as expected.
LAURA PORTER is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris. His work, which involves installations, sculptures and videos, is marked by an interest in the modes of value production, the genesis of materials as well as the role of the body in the economies of the disposable.
His works have been presented at the Centre Régional d’Art Contemporain Languedoc-Roussillon (Sète), the Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona), the Palais des Beaux Arts (Paris), the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne (Reims), the Parc Woluwe (Brussels), and In Extenso (Clermont-Ferrand).
VALENTIN LEWANDOWSKI is graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and the EHESS. He writes and produces performances that consist of autobiographical and satirical monologues.
His work has been shown in the 6th edition of Un nouveau festival (Centre Georges Pompidou, 2015), the programme Partitions performances (Fondation Ricard, 2016), the Fiac Officielle (Cité de la mode et du design, 2015), the performance cycle La voix humaine (Eglise Saint-Eustache, 2015), the Talk Show programmes (La Panacée, Montpellier, 2018) and on the occasion of Mosaïque des lexiques (Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Paris, 2019).
For the past five years, Laura and Valentin have been collaborating regularly in the creation of videos and video installations.
L’Estive is the Glassbox summer residency program. Longer than the production times of the rest of the year, it is in sync with the neighbourhood: between the summer torpor of Paris desert and the general indolence of a neighbourhood that has not yet left, the artist designs and implements a long-term project.
• Exhibition from September 12 to 28, 2019
• Performance by Valentin Lewandowski on the occasion of the closing Friday, September 27, 7.pm.
